Ingredients
Scale
Burger Patties
- 1/2 lb 80/20 ground beef
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
Burger Sauce
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
Toppings
- 2 slices medium cheddar or American cheese
- Ripe tomato slices, 2-4 slices depending on size
- Iceberg or green leaf lettuce, enough for 2 burgers
- Thinly sliced onion, about 1/4 cup
Buns
- 2 hamburger buns
Instructions
- Form Patties: Shape the ground beef into two round patties, approximately 1/2 lb each. Avoid overhandling the meat to keep the patties loose and juicy.
- Season Patties: Season the patties generously with salt and pepper right before placing them on the grill to help develop a crust.
- Preheat Grill: Heat the grill on high heat to ensure it is hot enough to sear the patties and create a flavorful crust.
- Grill Patties: Grill the patties to your preferred doneness using the temperature guide: 120°F for rare, 130°F for medium-rare, 140°F for medium, 150°F for medium-well, and 160°F for well-done.
- Melt Cheese: When the burgers are almost done cooking, place the cheddar or American cheese slices on top of the patties and allow them to melt for 1-2 minutes.
- Toast Buns and Assemble: Lightly toast the hamburger buns on the grill if desired. Spread burger sauce on the buns, then layer lettuce, tomato slices, onions, and the cheeseburger patties.
- Serve: Serve the cheeseburgers immediately while hot and juicy.
Notes
- This recipe makes two classic All-American cheeseburgers with a homemade burger sauce inspired by the In-N-Out Double-Double.
- For juicier burgers, handle the ground beef gently and avoid compressing the patties too tightly.
- The temperature guide helps you achieve the perfect doneness; use a meat thermometer for accuracy.
- You can customize toppings with pickles or add bacon for extra flavor.
- Toast the buns for added texture and flavor if desired.
