Easy to prepare and perfect for a quick weeknight dinner, this recipe delivers a delightful combination of textures and bold Mexican-inspired flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Fish and Seasoning

  • 4 mahi mahi fillets
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin

Peppers

  • 2 poblano peppers or jalapeños

Sauce

  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1/4 cup cilantro
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Assembly

  • 4 charred tortillas
  • 1/3 cup fish slaw
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • Jalapeños, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Season the Fish: Season both sides of the mahi mahi fillets evenly with garlic powder, salt, pepper, oregano, chili powder, and cumin. Press the seasoning onto the fish to ensure it sticks well.
  2. Cook the Fish: Heat olive oil in a large skillet or indoor grill over medium-high heat. Add the seasoned fish fillets and sear for 7-8 minutes until golden and ready to flip.
  3. Flip and Finish Cooking: Flip the fillets carefully and cook for an additional 7 minutes until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.
  4. Slice the Fish: Transfer the cooked mahi mahi to a cutting board and slice into strips. Drizzle lime juice over the sliced fish and sprinkle with chopped cilantro for added freshness.
  5. Prepare the Sauce: In a blender, combine sour cream, lime juice, cilantro, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and olive oil. Blend until smooth and creamy.
  6. Assemble the Tacos: Warm the charred tortillas. On each tortilla, layer the fish strips, fish slaw, sliced avocado, jalapeños, and finish with a drizzle of the prepared sauce.
  7. Serve: Garnish tacos with extra cilantro if desired and serve immediately for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Use fresh mahi mahi fillets for the best texture and flavor.
  • Char the tortillas over an open flame or hot pan for authentic smoky flavor.
  • Adjust the amount of chili powder and jalapeños to control the heat level.
  • The sauce can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 2 days.
  • For a healthier twist, use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream.
