Description

Quick & Easy Bang Bang Shrimp features crispy, tender shrimp coated in a creamy, tangy, and sweet chili mayo sauce with a hint of spice. Perfect as a flavorful appetizer or snack, this recipe is ready in under 30 minutes and can be easily adapted for air frying.

Ingredients

Scale

Shrimp and Coating

  • 1 lb Jumbo Shrimp (peeled and deveined)
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or substitute with 1 cup whole milk and 1 tbsp lemon juice, let sit for 5 minutes)
  • 3/4 cup cornstarch (or substitute with potato starch or tapioca starch)
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup vegetable oil (or any neutral oil for frying)

Sauce and Garnish

  • 1/2 cup Japanese mayonnaise (or substitute with regular mayonnaise)
  • 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce
  • 2 tbsp sriracha (adjust to taste for spiciness)
  • 1 green onion (finely chopped for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Marinate Shrimp: In a medium bowl, combine peeled and deveined shrimp with buttermilk. Let sit for 10 minutes to tenderize the shrimp.
  2. Prepare Bang Bang Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together Japanese mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, and sriracha. Set aside.
  3. Make Coating: In a shallow bowl or baking sheet, whisk together cornstarch, salt, garlic powder, and black pepper.
  4. Coat Shrimp: Dredge the marinated shrimp on both sides in the cornstarch mixture to evenly coat.
  5. Heat Oil: In a large 10-inch skillet or heavy-bottomed pan, heat vegetable oil over medium heat to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (use a thermometer to check the temperature).
  6. Fry Shrimp: Fry shrimp in batches without overcrowding, cooking about 1.5 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy. Avoid overcooking to keep shrimp tender.
  7. Drain Excess Oil: Remove cooked shrimp and place on a wire rack or paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  8. Toss with Sauce: Transfer warm crispy shrimp to a large bowl and pour the Bang Bang sauce over them. Gently toss to coat evenly.
  9. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle finely chopped green onions on top and serve immediately to enjoy the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • You can substitute buttermilk with whole milk and lemon juice as a quick homemade buttermilk alternative.
  • To make this dish air fryer friendly, coat shrimp as usual, spray lightly with oil, and air fry at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 8-10 minutes, shaking halfway through.
  • If you prefer less spicy, reduce or omit sriracha from the sauce.
  • For extra crispiness, double dredge the shrimp by dipping coated shrimp back into buttermilk then cornstarch again before frying.
  • Serve with steamed rice or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
