Chocolate Orange Truffle Ingredients
- 3.5 oz dark chocolate (70% cocoa)
- 2 tbsp refined coconut oil
- 2 tbsp orange juice (freshly squeezed)
- ½ tsp orange zest
- 2 tbsp icing sugar (powdered sugar)
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder (plus extra for dusting)
Instructions
- Chop Chocolate: Chop or break the bar of dark chocolate into small pieces to help it melt evenly and smoothly.
- Melt Chocolate: Place a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of boiling water (double boiler). Add the chopped chocolate to the bowl and stir continuously until fully melted.
- Add Coconut Oil: Remove the bowl from heat and stir in the refined coconut oil until completely combined and smooth.
- Mix in Flavorings: Add freshly squeezed orange juice, orange zest, icing sugar, and cocoa powder to the melted chocolate mixture. Stir thoroughly until the mixture is completely smooth and uniform.
- Chill Mixture: Place the bowl in the fridge and chill the mixture until it firms up enough to handle. This usually takes about 25 minutes, but check regularly to get the best consistency for shaping.
- Shape Truffles: Using a small spoon, scoop out portions of the chilled chocolate mixture and roll them into balls between your palms. To prevent melting, dust your hands with cocoa powder before rolling. If the mixture is too sticky, chill it a bit longer before shaping.
- Coat Truffles: Sprinkle cocoa powder on a plate and roll each ball in the cocoa until evenly coated for a classic finish.
- Store and Serve: Transfer the truffles to an airtight container. Serve at room temperature for the best texture and flavor.
Notes
- Use high-quality 70% cocoa dark chocolate for best rich flavor and smooth texture.
- Refined coconut oil is used here because it has a neutral flavor; unrefined coconut oil may add a coconut taste.
- Freshly squeezed orange juice and zest give the truffles a bright, natural citrus flavor; bottled juice is not recommended.
- Rolling hands dusted with cocoa powder helps prevent melting and sticking.
- Store truffles in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week or freeze for longer storage.
- For a festive touch, try rolling some truffles in finely chopped nuts or desiccated coconut instead of cocoa powder.
